When a boat engine overheats, it's almost always because the cooling isn't working properly. Here are the most common causes – and what you should do.

🔥 1. Broken or worn impeller

The impeller pumps in cooling water. If it breaks → no cooling.

Symptoms:

  • No or weak water jet
  • Engine quickly gets hot
  • Warning signal

Solution:

  • Replace impeller (recommended every season)

🌿 2. Blocked water intake

Seaweed, plastic, or debris can stop the flow.

Symptoms:

  • Poor water flow
  • Overheating after a short run

Solution:

  • Clear the water intake
  • Check under the boat

🚫 3. Clogged cooling channels

Salt, dirt, or scale can build up over time.

Symptoms:

  • Engine gets hot despite water flow
  • Worse cooling over time

Solution:

  • Flush the system
  • Service/internal cleaning

💧 4. Air in the cooling system

Leakage or incorrect installation can cause air pockets.

Symptoms:

  • Uneven temperature
  • Cooling works sometimes

Solution:

  • Check hoses and connections
  • Seal the system

⚙️ 5. Thermostat failure

The thermostat controls the temperature.

Symptoms:

  • Engine gets hot quickly
  • Or never reaches the correct temp

Solution:

  • Replace thermostat

🛢️ 6. Too little or wrong engine oil

Oil helps to cool the engine.

Symptoms:

  • High temperature
  • Wear/noise from the engine

Solution:

  • Check oil level
  • Change oil if needed

🧠 Quick checklist

If the engine gets hot:

  1. Check water jet
  2. Clear the intake
  3. Replace impeller
  4. Check thermostat
  5. Inspect cooling system

💡 Important to know

  • Continuing with an overheated engine → risk of serious engine damage
  • Turn off immediately if the temperature rises
